There are also Slag grenades, but a decent grenade will just kill most enemies anyway. For Maya there’s the Ruin skill, and for Sal you can have one of your two weapons be Slag. I’m currently working Axton’s turret up to be able to fire Slag, which will work like a teammate for me. For a solo player, that means hitting with the Slag weapon, and then switching weapons to finish them off. For a group, this is great because one (or more) people can slag the enemy and the rest can use whatever to kill them. Now Slag: Slag is awesome, BUT to get the most out of it you have to hit the enemy with Slag and then hit them with another weapon. This changes based on enemy weaknesses and quality of weapon (I have an orange Shock weapon at the moment that kicks butt), but Corrosive seems to be a better all-around killer of things.
